Review of Nestlé Hong Kong's Sustainability Actions in 2023
As a leading global food and beverage company, Nestlé places sustainability at the forefront of its business operations, with a commitment to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050. In 2023, Nestlé Hong Kong has taken significant strides towards sustainability, implementing various initiatives to address local environmental and social challenges, demonstrating its commitment to creating a positive impact on the environment and society.
Promoting Clean Recycling: Type 5 PP Plastic Recycling Campaign
To promote the clean recycling of Type 5 Polypropylene (“PP”) plastic, Nestlé Hong Kong and Hong Chi Association have joined forces to implement the pioneering “Type 5 PP Plastic Recycling Campaign” since 2020. Building on its success, the campaign celebrated its 3rd Anniversary in 2023, having achieved substantial progress. The recycling network has expanded to over 70 recycling points, including the addition of 20 new locations. Meanwhile, a public plastic-waste reduction themed carnival was successfully organized, attracting a participation of around 500 people times in total and effectively raising public awareness on environmental protection.
Throughout the year, 16 public education activities were conducted, involving nearly 400 participants from various local communities. These accomplishments highlight the ongoing commitment of Nestlé Hong Kong to drive sustainable change and fostering a culture of responsible recycling.
Reducing Food Waste: Donation to Support Local Community
In addition, Nestlé Hong Kong is actively implementing different measures across its value chain to care the environment. One of the key areas of focus is reducing food waste. Guided by its business principle of creating shared value, Nestlé Hong Kong actively engaged in food donation efforts, aiming to reduce waste and support local communities in need.
Last year, Nestlé Hong Kong partnered with various NGOs to donate over 370 thousand nutritious food items to the people in need in the society, hoping to contribute to minimizing environmental impact of food waste and conserving resources. This initiative not only helps individuals and families struggling with food poverty but also reduces greenhouse gas emissions associated with food waste, as less food ends up in landfills.
Collaborating with Consumers: Green Initiatives through Nestlé eShop
To lead a greener lifestyle among consumers, Nestlé Hong Kong launched thematic campaigns on its eShop last year, joining hands with consumers to support carbon reduction. During the campaign period, for each transaction in Nestlé Hong Kong eShop, the company donated HK$20 to the non-profit-making green organization, supporting a tree planting program that resulted in the planting of 200 saplings in Sai Kung.
Nestlé Hong Kong remains committed to its purpose of unlocking the power of food to enhance the quality of life for everyone, today and for generations to come. By implementing various sustainability initiatives, the company continues to make a positive impact on the environment, society, and the well-being of individuals and communities.
