Nestlé Hong Kong x Hong Chi "Type 5 PP Plastic Recycling Campaign" Proudly Enters Sixth Year Achieving Impact through Business-community Collaboration

Back to Press releases

As a pioneer in sustainability in the food and beverage industry, Nestlé Hong Kong is dedicated to integrating environmentally friendly practices across its value chain. The company actively promotes recycling and waste reduction through public education to raise awareness in the community. Recent efforts include the extension of “Yoghurt Container Recycling Reward Scheme till year-end and the Nestlé x Hong Chi “Green” Upcycling Experience Day@The Mills to be held on 1 June.

350% Increase in Recycling Volume

Nestlé Hong Kong continues to advance its commitment to sustainability through a range of environmental initiatives, including reducing the use of virgin plastics and adopting packaging designed for recycling.

Since 2020, Nestlé Hong Kong has partnered with the Hong Chi Association to launch the “Type 5 PP Plastic Recycling Campaign” (the Campaign), aimed at supplementing the city’s recycling network while promoting environmental education and upcycling practices. Over the past five years, the Campaign has collected more than 14,000 kilograms of Type 5 PP plastic—equivalent to over 430,000 food packaging containers—making a tangible contribution to Hong Kong’s sustainability efforts.

Ushering in its sixth year, the Campaign will enhance its impact by integrating upcycling concepts with STEM education. A series of new educational materials will be developed for primary students, with the goal of nurturing the next generation of green leaders.

The Campaign will continue to promote upcycled products, highlighting innovative techniques and the potential for recycled materials. These products will be made available at more retail outlets.

Five Years of Impact: Nestlé x Hong Chi Plastic Recycling Campaign Gains Strong Community Support

Over last five years, the “Type 5 PP Plastic Recycling Campaign” has grown into Hong Kong’s largest recycling network of its kind, thanks to strong community support and sustained public education efforts.

As of June 2025, the Campaign has established 80 active collection points across housing estates, shopping malls, schools, and the Nestlé Hong Kong office. Since its launch in 2020, over 14,000 kilograms of Type 5 PP plastic—equivalent to more than 430,000 food packaging containers—have been successfully recycled.

Furthermore, a total of 73 “5R”-themed activities—focusing on Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Recycle, and Remanufacture—have been conducted. These included talks at primary schools, craft stations, clubhouse workshops, and a citywide Type 5 PP plastic upcycling design competition.

On June 1, Nestlé x Hong Chi organized the "Green" Upcycling Experience Day@The Mills. The event resonated with “Beat Plastic Pollution”, the theme of the United Nations' World Environment Day of the year. It featured hands-on upcycling workshops, environmental games, an upcycled design exhibition, and upcycled product market. More than 300 participants took part, demonstrating wide public enthusiasm and a growing commitment to environmental action.

Highlights of the Sixth Year: Expanding Innovation, Education, and Community Reach

As the “Type 5 PP Plastic Recycling Campaign” enters its sixth year, the initiative is positioned to broaden its impact through innovative upcycling, enhanced environmental education, and deeper community engagement.

Building on previous success, the Campaign aims to produce approximately 1,000 upcycled crafts—including rubber shoe accessories and earrings—which will be made available for sale through the Hong Chi eShop, Nestlé eShop, and other retail platforms. The effort seeks to promote appreciation for the upcycling culture and the value of second-life products.

The Campaign will also launch a new series of teaching kits that integrate Type 5 PP environmental awareness with STEM learning and DIY activities, helping students develop stronger environmental knowledge and habits from an early age.

The Campaign plans to set up information booths and craft stations in public areas and residential clubhouses to offer interactive experiences designed to raise awareness about waste reduction and clean recycling practices.

Committed to maintaining no fewer than 80 recycling points, the Campaign will further standardize the cleanliness management of recyclables, improve the assessment system, and ensure the quality of recyclables.

Business-community collaboration Drives Green Future Through Recycling

Mr. Simon Cheung, Managing Director of Nestlé Hong Kong said, "Nestlé has always actively practiced environmental protection, integrating sustainability into daily operations, and steadily moving towards the goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050. Through cooperation with the Hong Chi Association, we have endeavoured to promote the recycling of Type 5 plastics, advocating clean recycling and upcycling in the public and the young generation. The sixth phase of the Campaign will see greater impact, allowing more individuals to join us to build a greener Hong Kong."

Ms. Zuie Lin, General Secretary of Hong Chi Association, said, “Hong Chi has long been dedicated to advancing community-based environmental efforts. We are pleased to continue working with Nestlé Hong Kong to educate people of all ages on the importance of recycling through hands-on learning. The Campaign also creates valuable training and employment opportunities for our trainees, helping them build practical skills in recycling operations. Through a range of public education activities, the community also gains a better understanding of the capabilities of individuals with intellectual disabilities, helping foster greater social inclusion.”
